Metal Gear. The first thing that comes up to mind are stealth, big stories, and giant metal robot dinosaurs to fight. Now the MGS series has become a household name due to these mechanics and unforgettable moments (When was the last time a villain read your memory card), but the same recognition isn't quite given to the original 2 titles, simple called Metal Gear. These 2 titles, mainly Metal Gear 2, created many precedents that helped shape the series. Heck, many story elements from MGS1 came from MG2 (Gray Fox, fighting four soldiers in an elevator, Snake falling in love with the female lead, etc.) Now this is where the game we're talking about comes into play. Metal Gear Solid for the Game Boy is a fantastic game reminiscent of the original 2 titles. The game may look different, but it's the Metal Gear you know.
Story: 10 Now, it may share the same name with it's PlayStation counterpart, but this game is completely different in terms of story. Actually, this game has a different title in Japan. There, it's a spin-off called Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel. Don't ask me why they changed it because I don't know. Anyways, here, there's no FOXHOUND, Liquid Snake, REX or anybody really from MGS1 (With the exception of Snake, Colonel, and Mei Ling). Here, Snake goes to stop a terrorist organization (okay so it's little similar) from using a new Metal Gear model (...okay maybe a little more similar). Okay simplified, the stories are pretty much the same, but it's where the details are that are different. Instead of Shadow Moses, the game takes place in a place called Gindra. Instead of FOXHOUND, we have the Gindra Liberation Front. And instead of MG REX, we have MG GANDER (Just saying, that's a pretty stupid name). The story actually is pretty cool and it actually has cutscenes, for the GBC, that's pretty impressive.
Graphics: 10 Now, the graphics here are one of the best I've ever seen on the Game Boy Color. Everything is nice and detailed along with bright colors to help them stand out. Plus, Snake's animations are extremely smooth.
Gameplay:10
Wow. Not only does the game successfully bring back the play style of Metal Gear 2, but it actually brings in gameplay elements from Metal Gear Solid. They mainly brought back items (they did remove cigarettes for the "fogger" to not influence the kids out there), weapons, and the running style of MGS1 while everything else is taken from MG2. A weird thing added is that the game is split into stages. You finish a stage and you get a rank at the end. It does help if you want to replay a certain part you enjoyed.
Difficulty:4
Not much to say here, never had too much trouble with the game. The AI is smart but not too smart that the game's hard to play. I did get caught and even died a few times but nothing big. There is a difficulty setting if you want the game hard or easy.
Sound:9 You're not going to find unforgettable tunes here, but you will find some awesome tracks. Who doesn't love Theme of Tara?
Replayability:7 Metal Gear Solid does offer some stuff to do to come back such as perfect ranks, the stages with new missions and the VR missions but nothing crazy. However, completing all the special stages does get you an awesome hint at Metal Gear Solid 2
Anyways, that's Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel, a perfect example that Metal Gear can work on the handheld. It's also proof of how awesome the original Metal Gear games are, so I totally recommend playing those games too (The MSX2 versions, avoid the NES versions). Between this and it's console counterpart, I still prefer Metal Gear Solid 1, but this game is still a game to enjoy.
