Isn't it funny people go out and vote when your votes don't count. Here's some proof:

No bug, it's just a misleading system that the election uses that's why most people think that "popular votes" or "their votes" will elect someone when that isn't the case.

You mean that you didn't know that that is how it works? Hell, even I knew that. And I don't care for politics.

So you could be in a state which vote has more weight on the election than another state?

Ok Fatbob, I'll explain to the best of my knowledge:

States have electoral votes, the number of electorals they have is proportional to the number of citizens in the state. You need 270 electoral votes to win the election. And the winner of the popular vote (the thing the citizens vote in) gets all the electoral votes for the state they won.

This can create problems for example when bush first won he had less popular votes backing him up, but they were in the right states so he won by electoral vote.

Jigsaw, you couldn't be more wrong about our votes not counting. The reason they know who will win those states is EXIT POLLS based on the way people voted. After seeing how people in those states voted based on additional polling where people who already voted told reporters who they voted for, the networks can figure who won which states unless they are close. If nobody voted for Obama in those states, then the check would be next to McCain's name. Also, it's not like the same thing didn't happen with states McCain won...

it's true. That is how they know. Exit poll info is usually pretty accurate so they can use it to project a winner of a state. Kind of in the same way that they use polls to determine the likely winner of a state weeks or days before the actual election. The poll it self doesn't actually mean anything. It's not final in any way. It's more of a media ploy to give you something all the time sort of thing. It has to feel like stuff is happening all the time so that the election isn't just a boring counting of votes which it actually is.

So is what DragonMaster said true then, how you vote to win a state, and a state contributes X amount to the total.
I seen in a newspaper that if you used the system we use here (popularity vote) it would have been alot more closer, about 47%-53%.

almost, but here's how the electoral college works:

States get electoral votes based on the number of house represenitives and senators added together. For intance, Pennsylvania has 19 members in the House and as all states do.. 2 in the Senate, so we have 21 electoral votes. Anyway the party of the winner of the state (using PA as an example again) such as Obama who's a Democrat. Gets to select 21 people to represent the state in December. Then the electorates vote for who they want to be president (so they could vote for anyone but that's why the party picks more hardcore people of their party to be electorates. In addition, the electoral college is supposed to be a safeguard if the people accidentally pick "the wrong guy" like if he's a criminal or something, the electorates can vote for the other candidate.

Eh... I'm just happy that the election hubbub is all over and we don't have to see political attack ads and stuff.
